M7: Pull Out vs. ESL Class

Two types of programs are common when it comes to models that are exclusively focusing on the development of English as a Second (or other) language:

  • ESL Pullout, generally used in Elementary schools, and
  • an ESL class period, generally the approach used in middle or high school.

ESL Pullout is a model wherein students are pulled out of their regular classroom, either individually or in small groups, for special instruction in the English language. Generally, these students have a beginning proficiency level in English, and what is covered during instruction time varies. The language of instruction is English.

An ESL class period is typically used in middle schools and high schools, due to the common scheduling styles seen in those levels. Similar to pull out ESL in elementary schools, the ESL class period is for students who are identified as Limited English Proficient (LEP) and includes direct teaching of English skills through the use of English.
