M10: Reading to, with, and by Multilingual Students
All three of these kinds of reading (to, with, and by) are essential for our multilingual students to be successful across all levels of schooling (and we should ideally continue to be readers even in adulthood!).
Reading is an excellent source of comprehensive input that enhances second language acquisition. Through reading, ELs have unlimited number of opportunities to encounter written English...
- Books, magazines, newspapers, the Internet, and other written sources
We need to give our students some control over what they read, and often they have more control over what they read than what they hear (although podcasts are now important listening building activities). In choosing texts, students can...
- Can choose the topic and difficulty level
- Can take time to figure out the meaning of new words, phrases and structures
- Re-read
- Look up in dictionary
- Ask a teacher or friend
- Figure out from context
Students who read more are:
- Faster readers
- Better readers
- Better writers
- Have more practical knowledge
So reading is pretty important for learning!
We are going to talk about these main types of reading strategies in the next few pages.
-
Read Alouds
-
Shared Reading
-
Guided Reading
-
Language Experience Approach
-
Independent Reading

"...when teachers take a linguistically and culturally informed approach to read alouds, learners are challenged to use and practice new language by making meaningful text- to- self and text- to world connections, allowing for deeper processing of the new language and deeper understanding of the ideas connected to that language."
On the next few pages, we will watch a video and read an article about interactive read alouds...
