M1: Video - A Student's Experience

Please aim to watch this video before moving too far along in the module.It will provide you with an example of the types of challenges some of our students face when learning English in an English-only classroom and provides great context for the chapter reading and activities. I will ask you about it in our Zoom class Wednesday.

There are many different experiences that our English Language Learners (ELL) face when transitioning to school in a language with which they are not totally comfortable. This video portrays one child's experience, however, his experience is fairly typical as an ELL in an English-only classroom. Please watch this video before our Zoom meeting. We will discuss it at that time. You may also want to reflect on Moises' experience as you prepare to share in zoom meeting on Wednesday.

As you watch this 12-minute video, consider the following factors: 

• Family and Family Influence. What role does Moises' family play in his education? How might they feel about his educational experiences?
• Moises' Experience in the Classroom. Notice Moises'' processing of the content in the Math lesson. How might he have been feeling at different times?
• Moises' Relationship with his Teacher. What can you infer about this relationship from the way she interacts with him in the classroom and in the hallway? What else stands out to you about their relationship? How do you think Moises feels about his teacher?
• Moises' Experience on the Playground. Notice Moises' behaviors and reactions to his experiences on the playground. What is happening? How might he be feeling? How might this situation have been better for him?
