M12: Solutions to Math Concerns

On the previous page, you read about some of the primary challenges for ELs learning Math. What follows are some strategies to help with those specific challenges:

  • Teach comparison wordsWriting in Math
  • Have students make card files of number words
  • Re-write story problems in simpler language
  • Give content-area specific definitions of words in Math
  • Have students make glossaries of math terms
  • Encourage use of diagrams and drawings
  • Go over steps and have students number the steps
  • Allow students to write in their L1, then get them help translating

Visual supports are KEY to aid in math comprehension.  You can use manipulatives, graphic organizers, and other charts and realia (real stuff) to provide context and visuals in math.

The graphic organizer below is an example of how you can have students create Venn diagrams from notes in class on properties of shapes.  Using a Venn diagram helps students see similarities/differences.circle and rectangles venn diagram
