M12: General Strategies for Content Area Teachers
Reflecting back to the idea that all teachers are language teachers, let's take a minute to think about what that looks like specifically in the content areas. As teachers focus on the content of Math, Science, or Social Studies, there are a number of strategies they can use to weave a focus on teaching language into their lessons. Remember - when creating your lesson plans, you will have two objectives - Content-Area (determined by the TEKS) and Language (determined by the ELPS/ how are you going to teach this TEK?).
We have already covered the four components of language - listening , speaking, reading, and writing. This diagram is an overview of how you can incorporate each of those into your content-area lessons (there are plenty of additional strategies, too! These are just examples).
For Listening and Speaking:

For Reading:

For Writing:

The next few pages will look at a Math, Social Studies, and Science specifically.
