M11: Publishing and Sharing

Publishing and sharing is an important part of the writing process and should be included in all classrooms to celebrate students' hard work in writing.

When you publish, you publicly acknowledge and recognize the work that went into the writing. You also create a community of writers by sharing your writing with each other.  It can also be motivating as students hear what their peers have written.

Publishing should not be done with all written pieces (usually less than 10%).  The most common form of sharing is through an Author’s chair. But there are so many different ways students can share and publish their work, including displays in the library or classroom book, sending home to parents, posting online, creating an anthology, etc etc.

Here is a video of a class author chair.  Notice how the students respond to the teacher's acknowledgment of their efforts.

Another way to share is to create podcasts or share audio files. This is especially good for ELs to hear themselves read their writing.  Here is a site to do that.
