M11: Writing Conferences and Feedback
The purpose of conferences is to give writer's feedback. There are many different kinds of conferences for students -- not only teacher/student but also student/student.
And many different topics -- such as editing (conventions) and revising (ideas).
Nancie Atwell, a writing teacher guru, talks about having different kinds of conferences, one of which is about conventions. She stresses the need to address both creative and conventional aspects of students’ writing in conferences. Students need to be conscious of conventions but not to the point where it restricts their writing. This is especially true of ELs. Don't focus too much on grammar. Focus on meaning making!
Barry Lane, a writing teacher guru, says, "When I really listen, I hear questions."
In his book, Reviser's Toolbox, there is this essay on listening. It is a great commentary on the power of listening in our lives.
"When people really listen to us that little fountain [spirit, imagination, intelligence, whatever you want to call it] begins to work again."
Now watch this video about providing feedback in writing.
Think about what strategies this teacher uses to support writing and writing feedback. How is she creating a safe space with ELs to create a supportive environment?
What kinds of questions does the teacher ask her students?
Think about the role of questions In writing and providing feedback.
