M11: Editing and Revising

There are two different stages of the writing process-- Editing & Revising.  How are they different?

Editing is polishing a piece in terms of mechanics or grammar

The goal of editing is to make sure you have used the correct mechanics.  The focus is on spelling, mechanics, conventions and format (genre specific).

Revising is: rearranging, adding, deleting, reworking the piece

The goal of revising is to polish your writing in some way.

But there is a catch: A writer needs feedback in order to revise the piece!  So usually revising goes hand in hand with conferencing - which is a highly effective form of feedback.

NOTE: You need to know the distinction between Editing & Revising for your TExES exam!

We will cover more on editing & revising ... but first, watch this 9 minute video on editing in 1st grade.

Editing

Editing is not my favorite stage in the writing process, but is absolutely necessary.  You can make it more fun by working together in pairs and/or by incorporating humor into your editing processes.  Here is a list of editing shorthand.

And here is an example of an "editing conference" designed to get students to prepare to come to an editing conference to discuss mechanics they may need to change in their writing.

These forms helps students know how to proceed with edits on their papers and how to also help their peers~
