M11: Grade-Level Expectations for Writing

So how do you know what to teach in writing on each grade level?

The TEKS are our guide in Texas for what to teach.  The following two files are helpful guides for knowing what to cover regarding writing instruction in each grade.  The first file is a checklist of the TEKS for writing across grade levels.  The second file comes out of a writing instruction book and is a list of writing skills starting in 1st grade and ending in middle school.  

These files will help you know what is grade level appropriate as well as what to expect in general when teaching writing.  Remember, ELs may be above or below grade level in English and their home language may already be much more developed than their English writing skills.  It is good practice to find out what their literacy skills are in their home language, too if you can.
