M3: More on Morphology
Morphology impacts words in various ways –
By adding a prefix or a suffix we can change the meaning of a word or the verb tense, etc.
- change verb tense (kick/kicks/kicked)
- change degree (fast/faster/fastest)
- change the lexical category of a word (if it is a verb, noun, adjective, etc) (teach/teacher)
- creating new words (tie/untie, test/pretest)
- compounding (sunroof)
(sun + roof = sunroof) these are two free morphemes bound together in their unaltered original forms to make a new word
- Shortening (fed from federal)
- Blending (smog)
(sm oke + f og = smog) these are two free morphemes smoke + fog that are blended together to make a new word, smog
- Acronyms (BFF)
Here is a video to explain morphology a little more and how you can use it in the classroom (and lesson plans!)
And here is a video to make you laugh.
Not all of the examples in this Mitú video are morphology... but a lot of them are. For example, "jangueando"... that is a codemix and a morphological change. And if you don't speak Spanish you may not get all of the jokes...or you may!?
