Welcome to Module 1: About English Language Learners
The ESL Block is designed to help you serve those students in your future classroom who are classified as an English Language Learner (ELL or EL). Wherever you will be teaching, you can expect that you will have students who are establishing proficiency in English as an additional language. Before we can talk about what we need to do as teachers, we need to have a common understanding about who an ELL is.
In this module, we will be exploring the population of students who fall into this category and identifying just how diverse those students are.
By the end of this module, you will be able to:
Describe the diverse nature of ELLs in Texas and the United States;
Evaluate the different labels used to describe ELLs;
Explain the importance of establishing a complete picture of an individual and his/her background; and
Generate ideas about how to discover students' backgrounds.
