MW: About Your Professor

Name: Ms. Yolanda C. Peca

My professional side: I started teaching over 20 years ago in a bilingual/ESL teacher/consultant.  I taught in  Austin ISD  2nd and 3rd grade.  During the time I was teaching in AISD, I also was a  Bilingual/ESL Reading Specialist and  Bilingual/ESL Instructional Specialist.  Then I was hired to be a Bilingual/ESL Consultant  for a consulting firm that worked with several districts in Texas.  One of my most interesting consulting jobs was doing an audit centering on Bilingual/ESL programs and making recommendations to enhance their programs. Well it was time for a transition and 11 years ago I came to teach the ESL block here at Texas State.  This semester, I will share some of my challenges and successes with you in hopes that I can highlight the beauty that exists in the role of educator. It is a career like no other and I love teaching!

My personal side: I  love to sing, play the guitar and quilt. I am a mother of two daughters whom are both married.  I have 3 grandsons, two are 12 and one is 8.  My daughters work in finance and in the same company.  My son in laws are great and I love them dearly.  I am truly blessed with my beautiful family.  I was raised in a family of six and lived in a barrio called Loma Park in San Antonio.  My parents raised us to  always see the best in people and respect others. While sometimes that perspective comes back to bite me, I feel better at the end of the day knowing that I have approached the situation that way.  I think I could write a book about my challenges about being a Latina and how it has made me into a very strong and successful teacher.
