MW: Welcome! Course Overview

About the ESL Block

Welcome to the ESL Block! Upon completion of this session, you will receive credit for SIX credit hours  toward your degree (CI 3332 & 4360) and be even closer to realizing your dream of becoming a teacher!

An important part of the ESL Block is the field experience in which you will explore the real world of classroom instruction. Because this course is 100% online, we have a unique  field experience. The fieldwork will be conducted via video footage. You will analyze footage of lessons in real classrooms, and report on how the experiences you are watching align with effective instruction for English Language Learners (ELL).

ESL Block Learning Objectives

While they are conducted as one section, the ESL Block courses (CI 3332 and CI 4360) have distinct, yet related objectives. Each of the activities we do in the course will address one or more of these objectives.

Furthermore, the material in the ESL Block addresses the domains and competencies included in the English as a Second Language (ESL)/Generalist EC-6 certification exam (TExES). You will find a page called TExES Connection at the end of each module that connects the content of the module to the domains and competencies on your certification exam.

Grading Scheme

This class is on a straight points system to make it easier for you to keep an eye on your final grade as we go along. Letter grades at the end of the semester will be entered according the percentage of possible points:

A = 90-100%

B = 80-89%

C = 70-79%

D = 60-69%

F = 59% and below

Possible point totals may shift over the course of the semester, so please consult the official course timeline for the most current possible total.
