Importing from PDFs
ADVANCED FEATURES
If you have a large collection of PDFs saved on your computer, it may be faster to create records by importing the PDFs instead of importing records from the database and manually attaching the PDFs. You will learn how to:
- Import one or multiple PDFs into EndNote.
- Set up an Auto Import folder.

Importing
- In the EndNote Desktop software, go to the File menu, then go to Import.
- If you are importing a single PDF, choose File. In the next selection box, use the Choose button to find the PDF you are importing.
- If you have a folder of PDFs that you'd like to import at the same time, choose Folder. In the next selection box, use the Choose button to find the folder that contains your PDFs.
- Make sure that your Import Option dropdown menu is set to PDF and click through to finish the import.
- If your PDF has a DOI (Digital Object Identifier) number on the first page, EndNote will automatically fill in the fields of the record. In this case, check that the information in the record is correct, and you're done!
- If your PDF is not readable (i.e., it is scanned from another document) or otherwise does not have a DOI on the first page, your record will be blank. In this case, you will need to manually fill in the fields with information from the PDF or merge the record with an existing duplicate.
Auto Import
- Auto Import allows you to designate a folder on your computer that EndNote will monitor for new PDFs. If a new PDF is saved to that folder, EndNote will automatically create a new record.
- From the EndNote Desktop software, go to the Edit menu and select Preferences. Choose the PDF Handling page.
- In the PDF Auto Import Folder section, use Select Folder to identify the folder that should be monitored. Check the box for Enable automatic importing and click Apply to save the changes.
