Welcome to Texas State University and to the School of Music!

All undergraduate music degrees require classes in Music Theory and Aural Skills.

Incoming undergraduate music majors (who arrive with no transcript credits for Theory & Aural) take an online Theory Placement Exam before beginning their first semester at TXST. The test results determine what theory course(s) to take in your first semester as a music major at TXST.

This site helps you to prepare for the Theory Placement Exam by providing access to study materials about clefs, rhythms, piano keyboard, intervals, scales, key signatures, triads, and seventh chords.

Not certain where to start? Take the diagnostic pre-test. Use the results of the diagnostic pre-test to determine topics to study.  After studying, practice with online and written tests.

When you attend Orientation, you will be enrolled in either MU 1112, or in both MU 1315 & MU 1115 If you attend Orientation before taking the Theory Placement Test, you can change your schedule before classes begin.

  • For scores of 75 and above, you should enroll in MU 1315 (Music Theory I) & MU 1115 (Aural Skills I).
  • For scores of 74 and below, you should enroll in MU 1112 (Basic Musicianship).
