Course Description
This course provides an introduction to social science research methodology, with an emphasis in criminal justice. The purpose of this course is to introduce you to the scientific method, to expose you to some of the research methods commonly used in the social sciences, and to teach you how to think critically and analytically about research methods and results.
Writing Intensive Course
Quality writing is a vital skill to have no matter your future career aspirations and a necessary one for you to pass this class. As this is a writing intensive course, you may need some additional help with the process. I would encourage you to use the university’s Writing Center, which is available for online appointments.
Learning Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, a student should be able to:
- Differentiate between various methods of acquiring knowledge
- Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of various research designs
- Understand the ethical concerns associated with conducting social science, particularly criminal justice research
- Differentiate between various sampling strategies
- Demonstrate strong written communication skills
