Career Exploration #1
Career Exploration 1: Self-Assessment

🤔 Have you ever wondered how prepared you are for professional life?

💭 Have you already decided what you will major in and pursue as a career beyond graduation?

💡 If not, have you thought about what interests you--or what doesn't interest you?

Objectives

By properly completing the Focus 2 assignment, you'll be able to:

  • Assess how ready you are to make career-related decisions.
  • Reflect on your work interests, values, personality, skills, and leisure interests.
  • See a list of occupations that match your work interests, values, personality, skills, and leisure interests.

Note!

  • You can print off a paper copy of these directions: Focus 2 Instructions.
  • To earn 80 points, you must complete both parts of the Career Exploration Assignment 1: Self-Assessment:
    • The Focus 2 Quiz following the steps below AND
    • The written assignment (directions are in Step 5)
  • See the Career Exploration Self-Assessment Rubric for grading criteria.

Directions

The first Career Exploration assignment will enable you to learn more about yourself by taking several standardized personal inventories, called Focus 2.

Be as honest as possible with your answers, because there are no incorrect responses to the inventory questions. In fact, upon completion of each inventory, you will receive overall results based upon your individual responses.

You may agree or even disagree with the summary results from each inventory-- and that is part of this assignment. You'll have a chance to say what you think about the results, and why.

☕So, find a good time to sit down, grab that cup of coffee, and take the time to learn about yourself and your interests--because these assignments are all about you.

Step 1: Create Your Focus 2 Account

  1. Navigate to the Focus 2 Career website to create a new account. Be sure to use 'bobcats' (all lower case) as the access code.

  2. Record your account user name and password somewhere safe so you can return to Focus 2. You may want to come back to finish your assessments if you don't complete them all at once, and you'll want to be able to come back and look at your results throughout the semester.

Step 2: Complete the "My Career Planning Readiness Assessment

Once you have confirmed your Focus 2 registration and logged in, click on the START button located under the "My Career Planning Involvement" section on the top of the webpage.

  • Complete the My Career Planning Involvement survey webpages that follow by filling in the Likert scale star ratings. This assessment measures your involvement in activities that are part of the career- planning process, and it lets you know how ready you are to make informed career decisions.
  • When complete, your individual results page will appear. Notice your numbers and read the results. When you’re finished, you can simply click 'Finished' at the bottom of the webpage to be taken back to the Focus 2 main webpage.

Step 3: Complete the 5 Self-Assessment Inventories

From the Focus 2 main webpage, navigate a little lower to the “Self-Assessment” section. Here, you can complete all 5 self-assessments in any order:

1. Work Interest     2. Values     3. Personality     4. Skills     5. Leisure

As you complete each assessment and review the results, click the “home” icon at the top left corner to return to the list of assessments. At any time, you can save your work and return in the future. (Remember to record your Focus 2 log-in credentials so you can return easily!)

Step 4: Combine Your Assessments, Download and Save Your Results

Once you have completed all 5 self-assessments, click on “Combine Assessments” (bottom right-hand side of the page).

  • On the next webpage, click on each of the 5 self-assessments to make them turn dark blue, and then click “Continue” to see occupations that may have appeared in more than one assessment you completed.

  • Click the “home” icon located at the top left-hand side of the page to return to the Focus 2 main page.

    • Navigate to the very bottom right-hand side of the page and locate the “Review and Print My Portfolio” icon.
    • Click this icon and on the next webpage, click “SELECT ALL” to ensure all appropriate assessments are included.
    • Next, click the “Build My Portfolio” button.
    • Once this report has been generated, navigate back up to the very top right-hand corner of the webpage, and click on the download icon to save your customized assessment results report to your computer.

Step 5: Return to Canvas to Reflect on Your Results

After you have downloaded and saved your results, return to this page, and complete the Career Exploration 1: Self-Assessment with Focus 2 assignment (click the next button to fill in the written assignment).
