Evaluating Links Exported from Source Documents (Word/PowerPoint)
Links created from a source document should have all the following elements to work correctly:
- A link tag
- The textual content as a child element of the link tag
- A single Link-OBJR annotation beneath the textual content that is a child of the link tag.
This tag formation helps associate keyboard and mouse functionality to the link which allows users to activate the link. It also houses the URL for the link while maintaining the text label.
Adding Alt Text to Links
If you have a PDF with ambiguous link text (click here/read more), follow these directions to add alternative text to the link:
- Open the Navigation Pane and select the tags icon.
- Find the Link tag <Link> that governs the link that you are editing.
- Right-click the Link tag to open its context menu and select Properties from the list.
- Under the Tag tab in Properties, add a text alternative in the Alternative Text field.
- Select Close to save your changes.
Instead of reading the ambiguous link text, a screen reader will now read the alternative text instead.
