Understanding the Logical Reading Order Warning
The logical reading order warning always requires a manual check since Adobe Acrobat's accessibility checker does not know the intended reading order of documents to 100% accuracy. This item always require a manual check to guarantee PDF/UA and WCAG conformance.
Checking Logical Reading Order
- Open the tag tree in the navigation pane.
- Select the top-most tag in the tag tree.
- Using the down arrow on your keyboard, move through the tag tree sequentially while paying attention to the highlighted areas in the document body.
- If your source document was created in PowerPoint or Word, your logical reading order should be correct.
- InDesign exports will need to have their tag order restructured.
- Ensure that the tag order matches the reading order of the document.
- If the tag order matches the reading order, you can right-click the logical reading order warning and select pass or ignore the warning.
Fixing Logical Reading Order
You have two options when moving tags to correct reading order:
- Use cut and paste to move the tags into the correct place in the tag tree.
- Use your mouse to manually drag and drop the tags into their proper sequence.
Use caution when performing these actions as a cut tag might not be recoverable using the undo feature of Adobe Acrobat. Also take care when dragging and dropping tags into the correct place to ensure you do not accidentally nest them inside of the preceding tag.
Follow these steps when using cut/paste to move tags:
- Save your file!
- Right-click the tag you want to move, and select cut (standard cut/paste keyboard commands work as well).
- Right-click the tag immediately preceding the desired place for the cut tag and select paste.
- If the tag needs to be nested inside of a parent tag, then select paste as a child instead.
- Save the document.
