Searching the Library Catalog through EndNote Desktop
ADVANCED FEATURES
From the EndNote Desktop app, you can search for results in the Texas State library catalog. This is an alternative to exporting records from the library catalog.
- In EndNote Desktop, select Online Search under the Tools menu
- Scroll down and select Texas St U-San Marcos. This option includes the full library catalog from both Alkek and RRC Campus Libraries.
- Search the library catalog using the search bar as you would normally. This search works best with specific, narrow search terms.
- If you want to do something similar to a keyword search, select the Author/Title/Subject option.
- After you hit the Search button, you will see a popup that shows how many search results are available for your search terms and allows you to limit which results are returned. It is a good idea to limit the number of search results returned for two reasons:
- If your search yields thousands of results, it will take a long time to import from the library catalog.
- All records that appear in the search results will be added to your EndNote Library.
- Search results will be added to the Recently Added folder, and you can add them to your other Groups from there.
- You can highlight specific references in your search results using the Ctrl button and then drag them to any of your groups.
NOTE: EndNote lists several databases under Online Search as a default. Of these, users from Texas State can only use the two that are accessible without a subscription: PubMed and Library of Congress. Other subscription databases, including Web of Science and EBSCO databases, cannot be searched through the EndNote desktop software because of security concerns. Instead, search the databases as normal through the library website and export records into EndNote.
